You’d better get your wealth up, and do it soon. Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only replacing your job, but AI bots are now conducting job interviews and that’s bad news for most job applicants.

Chip giant NVIDIA’s earnings report just came out, and CEO Jensen Huang touted the growth of the AI revolution in the U.S. That’s all fine and well, but for America’s struggling middle class, it’s problematic when AI-powered robots are taking over human roles.

Among those roles are crucial responsibilities in corporate human resources departments. Ironically enough, these departments are currently being populated with non-human job applicant screeners.

This matters during a time when the employment landscape is far from ideal. In July there were 62,075 job cuts, up 29% from June and bringing the 2025 total to 806,383 layoffs; this marks the highest January-to-July layoffs total since the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020.

In other words, simply staying out of the job market isn’t an option for many Americans in 2025. Unless you’ve built up a sizable nest egg, you’ll probably have to apply for employment sooner or later, and this could mean facing an automated interviewer.

Here’s what a recent survey found:

  • More than 8 out of 10 companies use AI to review resumes.
  • 40% of companies employ AI chatbots to communicate with candidates.
  • Around one-fourth of companies use AI to conduct interviews.
  • Another 19% of companies plan to add AI for conducting interviews this year.

Jim Chaffee, an AI expert at the University of Iowa, observed that AI tools are convenient for employers. “Using AI early in the process to screen out candidates is a useful and time-saving tool for employers,” he noted.

However, Chaffee also warned that “chatbots are not properly equipped to get more in-depth with a candidate, at which point human participation is vital.” The issue, I would suggest, is that corporations won’t bother to integrate human interactions into the job interview process if this would require expenditures of time and money.

AI is still used for screening when businesses outsource their hiring tasks, by the way. For example, Devin Jones, a senior associate at ROCS Grad Staffing in Washington, D.C., revealed, “We have hundreds and hundreds of resumes and applications to go through, and for every single interview that we complete, we’re using an AI tool.”

The AI chatbot takeover is undoubtedly contributing to the feelings of hopelessness and desperation among U.S. job seekers. Pessimism is clearly on the rise as 20% of consumers currently say that jobs are “hard to get,” up from 14.5% in January.

Moreover, some of the current crop of AI-powered job interviewers are far from ideal. It’s not difficult to find videos on YouTube of malfunctioning AI bots ruining job interviews with bizarre glitches.

Those videos might be humorous, but it’s not funny if your job interview is interrupted by an AI interviewer that gets stuck repeating the same phrase over and over. In some instances, these chatbots just start repeating unintelligible gibberish, leaving the job applicant confused and frustrated.

Additionally, the idea of building rapport or camaraderie with a job interviewer goes out the window when you’re talking to an AI robot on a screen. Regardless of your qualifications and fitness for the role, you’ll be judged within milliseconds based on an algorithm.

And of course, they’ll disapprove of any job candidate’s use of AI to respond to questions. After all, they hold all the cards and you hold none, and the AI revolution will ensure that it stays that way.
